Once upon a time, in 1608 to be precise, there was a witch. She was witching about happily when she was visited by the devil himself on a dark December night. He came in the form of a charming young man and told of a quotum of curses. Since this quotum was not being met, he decided to pay a certain number of witches 20 gold coins per every curse cast. The witch, feeling rejuvenated by her new income started to curse almost indiscriminately. Which proved itself to be unwise, as she started to attract attention. Sure enough, people started catching on to her witchery and she was sentenced to death by fire. She was bound up in the town square with a woodpile beneath her feet. As the executioner set fire to the wood, she spoke her last curse: "May it rain down upon this place eternally.". As she burned, her ashes were taken up by the wind. They formed a dark cloud over the square and the cloud kept on growing. When it was big enough to cover the entire town, it started to rain. Days passed, but the rain did not cease. Weeks passed, but the rain still did not cease. After a month, some of the townspeople had an ingenious idea. They went to the town square and build a fountain. As soon as the fountain was in working order the rain finally did cease. For the witch's words were now fulfilled in another fashion.
